Discussion about replaceability (from File talk:Ted Bundy murder tools police photo.jpg[edit]

User Rockfang contends that this image is replaceable by a free equivalent. This is simply false. No free equivalent to this image exists. Vidor (talk) 12:22, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - I feel this is a wasteful abuse mistaken case of image tagging, as this is a clear example of an image where no free-use can be created. Doc9871 (talk) 13:06, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A number of the items in the picture are already listed in this section. Indeed, it may be difficult to find a free image that conveys the same information, but the second part of the deletion template "could be adequately covered with text alone" I think applies.--Rockfang (talk) 20:09, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. You're wrong. The image is clearly valuable, as it is a visual illustration of the reason for his initial arrest, the reason he was linked to the DaRonch and Kent cases, and his modus operandi. It is clearly irreplaceable--not "difficult", as you state, but impossible to find a free equivalent. And all I can say as to the contention that text is adequate is that if one takes that position then no images are necessary, ever, because anything can be described with text. Vidor (talk) 00:02, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Vidor. This image is of historical significance. There is no "Serial Killers Museum" where a person could go to take a free image of this kit. Arguing that it "could be adequately covered with text alone" is the weakest of all arguments for deletion of photos that carry historical significance. Following that reasoning, we could reasonably delete all photos in place on Wikipedia, free or fair use aside. Wildhartlivie (talk) 00:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree with my other fellow editors about this. The photo is necessary for historical reasons. It is all of this gear that Bundy had in his possession that got him arrested to begin with. There is no way words alone can show why these items were damning to him. It shows his history of why they thought they had the right person. He got arrested with this stuff and later was found guilty of the crimes. The photos in this article is definitely needed. There is again no way words alone would show what the pictures tell. Please leave the photo so it is usuable in the article. This is what 'fair use' is about. We can't find this photo just anywhere you know, it's really specific to his crimes. Thanks, --CrohnieGalTalk 12:32, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think this discussion above was either complete or needs completion. The image should not have been deleted with editors explaining why it's needed and one editor explaining why it should be deleted. Please discuss or return the image for use, thanks, --CrohnieGalTalk 15:37, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re-sized version of previous image[edit]

This is a smaller, re-sized version of a prior image, Ted Bundy murder tools police photo.jpg. I assume that the larger image, now an orphaned fair use photo now that this smaller image has been substituted, will be deleted. Vidor (talk) 03:35, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yet more about this photo[edit]

User:Rockfang, having previously attempted to remove this photo only to have a discussion consensus form to keep it and an admin review to concur, proceeded without asking any other opinions to dramatically shrink the version posted to the Ted Bundy article. The version she shrank, that of Jan. 27, 2010, was already reduced significantly from the prior, original version. Vidor (talk) 16:52, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, please leave the image as it is now with Vidor's last revert, which is the consensus version. It looks good in the article now. Thank you, --CrohnieGalTalk 16:57, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
