This map[edit]

This map was derived from another which also showed some places where wearers had encountered some level of discrimination. I have changed the map to mainly indicate prevalence of hijab. I have not shown level of discrimination except where there are specific laws/regulations preventing it's wear in the course of a normal activity (where hijab would not interfere with that activity). I have not shown places where there has been a documented instance of discrimination against hijab wearers as it would probably encompass most of the non-muslim world. And probably large slabs of the muslim world too -- there's no accounting for people. Possibly the map could be improved by indicating countries where wearing hijab is likely to provoke overt hostility, but I suspect this would stray wildly into non-NPV territory.

I have made this map as accurate as I can, but I may have got some got some countries wrong (North Africa in particular was difficult to research), different norms in different parts of the country sometimes means it's hard to make a generalisation, one woman's traditional headscarf may be another woman's hijab -- one woman's hijab is another woman's purdah, and of course norms will inevitably change over time. And of course the line between unusual, common and pervasive is pretty vague -- I'm thinking less than 20% is unusual, more than 80% is pervasive. People with special knowledge of a country should go to town making corrections.

Problems:

  • The category "Quite common" seems to indicate a prevalence of hijab less than "Common". This is misleading. It should be the other way around.
  • How do you distinguish "prevalent" from "common" (let alone "common" and "quite common")?
  • We should have a list of sources for every country that's on this list. The sources should be here, and anyone who asks for them should be redirected here as well.

"Quite" means 100% or absolute. Quite common is literally the same prevalence as common. It should be "common" and then "less common". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.255.62.16 (talk) 13:13, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did the original map and while I think the quite common/common distinction is difficult to make. Personally I don't support the distinction as a useful one. If it is to be retained however, I agree that (a) it should be renamed to make it clear that it is less common than common, and b the order of the legend should be changed to make this ordering obvious. The pervasive/common distinction I see as relatively clear -- it's pervasive if you stick out as unusual by not wearing it; it's common if you can wear either hijab or another form of clothes and neither is considered unusual. E.g. in India or Turkey no one will be surprised by some one wearing Hijab, though most women don't. In Sydney Australia, to take a random example (okay, I live there), you see it sometimes but you will stick out. Places like France with substantial muslim populations -- getting a bit border line, but I still wouldn't classify it as common.

I also agree that we should have a list of sources for every country. Good luck with that.

Finally I do not understand why Indonesia and Malasia have been removed from the countries in which hijab is common. I'm certain they are.

Frankly I suggest my original map of 28/9 be resurrected unless someone can explain why this one is an improvement.

I, too, immediately noticed that Malaysia and Indonesia were not shaded in some way indicating the frequent observation of sartorial hijab in those countries. Hijab is common there. May we not reflect this in the map?

It's not perfect, but this map gives a good general idea. I would suggest reordering the items in the key from most prevalent to least prevalent, e.g. the color of countries where most women wear hijab should be closest to the color of places where it is required. Also "quite prevalent" is unclear: Perhaps replace current terminology with rare (Australia), few (France), many (Kenya), most (Egypt), required (Saudi). Red boxes are great. --Zachbe (talk) 04:47, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesia & Malaysia[edit]

Why does the revised map not show Indonesia & Malaysia? They are Muslim countries where the majority of women wear headscarves. This seems strange. If you are going to show Bosnia and Turkey on the map, then of course you must show Indonesia & Malaysia too. The type of headscarf worn in Bosnia & Turkey is very similar to the one worn in Indonesia & Malaysia. Can someone please add them? --Mezaco (talk) 20:13, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia = quite common[edit]

These countries should be in yellow and not in green. Please change the map. Mightymights (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Somalia is using the Sharia law. It is by law that women must wear a Hijab. Can you add it too? Runehelmet (talk) 16:47, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
