Powers, neutrality

"Neutral Powers" is a standard but now archaic phrase for "neutral countries". There were also "interested powers" and so on when WW1 broke out, and none of these expressions implied Great power status.

The comment about Belgium is correct, but there are far worse errors on this map. It's labelled "1914", so its purpose should be to show the two armed camps whose fear of one another and desire to engage each other before one could outgrow the other were a main factor in causing the war. Many of the countries shown here were completely outside this system and did not join the war until well after 1914: Romania (which actually had a defence pact with Germany in 1914), Bulgaria (courted by both sides in 1915), Belgium (as has been said, fought for neutrality, not an alliance), Portugal (joined in 1916 over colonial transgressions by Germany), Italy (in 1914, ought technically to be purple!), Turkey (pressured into joining by Germany after 1914) and Greece (seriously considered Central Powers membership for much of the war).

Also, Luxembourg wasn't a Central or an Entente power and should in 1914 be coloured neutral. The confusion arrises from the fact that Germany occupied the whole country and imprisoned its army before it had a chance to declare war!

Also, now that I think about the comment below mine, Iceland was part of Denmark in 1914, so it should have its name shrunk and Reykjavik's city marking reconsidered (the capitals of much larger and more important sub-national entities which are in themselves big cities, such as Edinburgh, Budapest, and Munich, are not shown). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.236.236.97 (talk) 21:51, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

LOL. Calling Norway and Iceland "powers" is a bit far-fetched

Neutal Powers

Belgium was among the neutral powers in 1914. Until German forces invaded the country. Therefore I think there is a mistake on this map, Belgium should be in pink color instead of blue.

Woefully inaccurate...

This is an extraordinarily poor map. I won't go into the individual inaccuracies myself; they have been outlined very nicely above.
