Lone Civilizations[edit]

Huntington regarded Ethiopia, Israel, Haiti (and Japan) as lone civilizations: one-state civilizations. Hence, on the map, Ethiopia should not be shown as part of African civilization, Israel should not be shown as part of Islamic civilization, andHaiti should not be shown as part of Latin American civilization. 141.166.227.101 (talk) 04:25, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And Eire, Italy, and Spain are in Western, when they should, by that definition, be in Latin American; or vice versa. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eatmywords (talkcontribs) 20:35, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think you missed Huntington's explanation for why Latin America is considered as a possibly separate civilization from the West. It has nothing to do with speaking a Romance language or practicing Catholicism. Despite the fact that it was colonized by Spain and Portugal, large portions of Latin America still have a lot of indigenous influences, in addition to African influences brought over by slaves. The region from Mexico south to Nicaragua has a lot of American Indian influences on dialect, folk beliefs, cooking, art, and music. In South America, the same is true for the Andean countries and Paraguay. Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, northern Brazil, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic have very evident West African influences in their cultures, with significant American Indian cultural traits left over as well. In addition, Latin America went through a lot of unique historical developments after independence due to its geographic isolation from Europe, while Spain and Portugal were always deeply intertwined in Western European politics. Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, Costa Rica, and to a strong degree, Chile, are heavily Western in character but there's still that "post-independence cultural divergence" factor to consider. --74.103.150.125 (talk) 22:44, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
