Summary

Description
English: Canting arms of Trobridge of Trobridge in the parish of Crediton, Devon: Or, over water proper a bridge triple-towered gules (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.738); Pole: Argent, a bridge gules arched with a flag on the top (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.505). This image attempts to combine both blazons. Canting arms: "Three/trois + bridge". One of the rare, if not the only, surviving ancient depictions of these arms is on the monumental brass in St Swithun's Church, Sandford, Devon, of Mary Carew (1550-1604), wife of Walter II Dowrish, of Dowrish in the parish of Sandford, near Crediton. (See File:MaryCarew Died1604 SandfordChurch Devon.PNG). An early 20th century image of these arms is included in the large heraldic window on the south side of Crediton Parish Church, erected by bequest of Rev. Smith-Dorrien (d.1924).
