Summary

Description
English: Scene from a play in the stage hall of the progressive boarding-school Schule am Meer (School by the Sea) on the East Frisian island of Juist in Prussia, built in 1930/31 by the Berlin-based renowned architect Bruno Ahrends (1878–1948). With such plays performed in German, partly also in English and French, the S.a.M. during school holidays went on tour to professional stages in major German cities. They received excellent reviews from professional theater critics. With regard to the foreign languages, not only the subject teachers but also native-speaking pupils and students from England and France provided support. The literary, musicologist and critic Hans Mayer (1907-2001) in 1979 wrote about Luserke's Shakespeare play Twelfth Night, Or what you will performance with his S.a.M. students in Cologne at the end of the 1920s: “I have never seen the beautiful work more graceful and cheerful. Every performance since then, including a festival performance in Salzburg, must fade away. The canon Shut up, you dog was irresistible. Youth and grace still in rudeness”. The Austrian actress Maria Fein characterized headmaster Martin Luserke as a "genius of the theater" (Theatergenie) when she was visiting a stage-play in Juist.
