Summary
| Description | On the outskirts of Ammochostos lies the monastery of St. Barnabas. Established in the 5th century by emperor Zenon but has nothing of the original buildings that were destroyed by Arab raids. The current building dates back to the 18th century. Since 1974 the monastery is under Turkish occupation and not functioning as a place of worship. The occupying army converted the church into an icon museum, bringing icons stolen from churches across the occupied part of Cyprus. The cells were converted in an archaeological museum again with artifacts stolen. |
