In 1613 Jahangir, the Mughal emperor, dispatched his ambassador, Khan 'Alam, and a large retinue to the Iranian court of Shah 'Abbas I. The 1613-1619 Mughalembassy of Khan Alam to the court of Shah Abbas was recorded by both the Persian artist Rizayi Abbasi and the Mughal artist Bishn Das. They also painted individual studies of the figures present and the pose of Shah Abbas in this painting is repeated in a portrait of his commander in chief.
