DescriptionSaddleback caterpillar - Acharia stimulea, Prince William Forest Park, Triangle, Virginia.jpg
English: Saddleback caterpillar - Acharia stimulea, Prince William Forest Park, Triangle, Virginia. Here is my sad story: I was turning over leaves looking for caterpillars when I felt an intense stinging sensation on my left wrist. Since I was working with Pin Oak, I thought perhaps the "pin" at the end of the leaf had punctured my skin. Then it happened again. That is when I noticed this beautiful Saddleback caterpillar which was, of course, the cause of the sting. According to some sources, the sting is reputed to “burn like fire” with pain that can last for days. Side effects of a Saddleback Caterpillar sting can include nausea, dizziness, a rash, sweating, cold chills, tingling, numbness, and possibly even heart palpitations. Thankfully, I only felt the sting. The pain was gone within 3 hours.
