Summary

Description
English: This marker was placed near where in 1704 Rev. John Williams preached the first Christian sermon in what is now Vermont. He was the minister in Deerfield MA and was taken as a hostage in the Deerfield Raid, and marched north to Canada, to be later traded for a French hostage taken in an earlier English raid. The nearby river was named the Williams River after him. This marker is located just north of the intersection of Rts. 5 & 103 in Rockingham, VT.
