Summary[edit]

Scan of a postcard, replicating a 1936 poster, originally published in the United Kingdom, introducing the board game Monopoly, published there by Waddingtons. Notable on the card's artwork is the incorrect layout of spaces on the game board. On the reverse, the card incorrectly states that the game's spaces replaced "New York's street names with London counterparts." The original spaces are in fact from Atlantic City, New Jersey. Scanned by John D. Buell on 16 August 2006.

Copyright on the postcard is held by the Robert Opie Collection. Copyright on the design elements of Monopoly is held by Hasbro.

Fair use rationale:

  1. This postcard illustrates the introduction of the game of Monopoly to the United Kingdom in 1936, thus being historically significant.
  2. The image is used in the article History of the board game Monopoly for illustrative and educational purposes only.
  3. The image appears in a lower resolution than the original, and uses an inferior graphics format (JPEG).
  4. It is not believed that use of this image will infringe on the copyrights of the Robert Opie Collection, who manufactured the card based on an original poster, or Hasbro, who own the copyrights for the board game Monopoly.
