Tolkien as devised by the author. This artwork was drawn by Tolkien himself and was used as the dust jacket for the first 1937 Allen & Unwin hardback edition. When translated, the runes visible in this picture read: "n being the record of a years journey made by Bilbo Baggins of Hobbiton compiled from his memo"; cf. Hammon & Scull (2000). |

The entire front cover. Because the image is a book cover, a form of product packaging, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image. |
