Description
English: H. J. Lewis, self-portrait, Library of Congress. Shows the right profile of his face, concealing his blinded and disfigured left eye. On the table in front of him are various tools and texts of his trade and a copy of the Indianapolis Freeman. His palette bears the Latin motto, "Not for ourselves alone but for the whole world." He is flanked by two of his children, his eldest son, John W. Lewis, and his eldest daughter, Lillian Estella Lewis. In the background are the recently completed Brooklyn Bridge and Eiffel Tower.
