Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Elizabeth Best Taylor, OBE., JP. (21 September 1868 - 27 April 1941) of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is labeled (signed?) on the front Mrs. T.E. Taylor - her husband was the New Zealand politician Thomas Edward Taylor (1862-1911). The portrait was likely taken when she became president of Women's Christian Temperance Union of New Zealand in 1926. Original is stored with WCTU NZ archives in Auckland. She was a foundation member of the National Council of Women of New Zealand; she started and served as the first president of the Christchurch Creche and Kindergarten Association (later the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association); and, she started the Christchurch branch of the League of Nations Union of New Zealand. Taylor was also one of the first women appointed as Justice of the Peace in New Zealand;she was awarded the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935 and awarded the OBE at the Coronation of King George VI in 1936.
