Description
English: Corn field in "The Steertse Heath", amidst the Kalmthout Heath, on 11 September 2016. Alongside this field, big metal plates were layed down, creating a road presumably to enable access for motorized vehicles related the field.

Shortly after taking this picture, I asked "Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos" why (and since/untill when) there were corn fields in the Kalmthout Heath. In September 2016, I received the following reply of that agency, via its website (translated from Dutch here below):

Dear Vincent, The Steertse Heath (Dutch: De Steertse Heide) is a historical agriculture enclave within the Kalmthout Heath. The concerned lands are mostly grasslands but there are also some farmlands amidst the nature reserve. As "Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos" we try to acquire the remaining private properties but such is only possible on a voluntary basis. The owner-farmer must thus himself be determined to sell. If he is not, he can continue farming and fertilizing for quite a while, considering the current legislation. In the area, it's a matter of six lots of corn, of which we were able to buy two. Those are phased into grassland with adapted fertilization as a transitional arrangement for the farmer and subsequently the "Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos" takes them fully under their own administration. Currently thought is given to an alternative way to acquire the remaining lands, whether grasslands or farmlands. After all, to be able to meet our goals it is necessary that the fertilization- and eutrophication-pressure dissapears completely from The Steertse Heath. Also the Netherlands is a strong requesting party of this, since the leaching water has a negative influence on the very important mere De Groote Meer on the territory of the Netherlands. Nederlands: Maïsveld in "De Steertse Heide", te midden van de Kalmthoutse Heide, op 11 september 2016. Langs het veld waren grote metalen platen neergelegd die een weg vormden, vermoedelijk voor de toegang van gemotoriseerde voertuigen gerelateerd aan het veld.

Kort na het nemen van deze foto, vroeg ik het "Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos" waarom (en sinds/tot wanneer) er maïsvelden in de Kalmthoutse Heide waren. In september 2016, kreeg ik het volgend antwoord van dat agentschap, via haar website:

Beste Vincent, De Steertse Heide is een historische landbouwenclave binnen de Kalmthoutse Heide. De betrokken gronden zijn voornamelijk graslanden maar er liggen ook enkele akkers temidden het natuurgebied. Als ANB trachten wij de resterende privé-eigendommen te verwerven maar dat kan enkel op basis van vrijwilligheid. De eigenaar-landbouwer moet dus zelf bereid zijn te verkopen. Is hij dat niet dan kan hij met de huidige regelgeving nog wel enige tijd verder boeren en bemesten. In het gebied gaat het over 6 percelen maïs waar we er twee van konden aankopen. Die worden gefaseerd omgezet naar grasland met aangepaste bemesting als overgangsmaatregel voor de landbouwer en vervolgens neemt het ANB die volledig zelf in beheer. Over een alternatieve piste om de resterende gronden in landbouwgebruik, hetzij grasland hetzij akker, te kunnen verwerven wordt momenteel nagedacht. Om onze doelstellingen te kunnen halen is het immers noodzakelijk dat de bemestings- en eutrofiëringsdruk volledig verdwijnt uit de Steertse Heide. Ook Nederland is daar sterk vragende partij voor aangezien het uitspoelende water een negatieve invloed heeft op het zeer belangrijke ven De Groote Meer op Nederlands grondgebied.
