Summary

Description
English: Chargé d’affaires a.i. David Gilmour had the pleasure to exchange with le president du Conseil militaire de transition (CMT) Mahamat Déby Itno to discuss U.S. support for a peaceful, timely, and civilian-led transition of power to a democratically elected government by October 2022. The Chargé underlined the importance of holding free and fair elections in which transition leaders should not participate, a common condition of political transitions around the world. The Chargé indicated U.S. support for an inclusive national dialogue open to all stakeholders. He reiterated the United States’ support for the security and territorial integrity of Chad. Out of an unexpected crisis, Chad has an opportunity to establish a resilient democracy with strong institutions, ensure security and prosperity, and reinforce the rule of law and human rights.
