English: JACKSON FORTIFIED A MUD RAMPART AND DITCH, CALLED THE RODRIGUEZ CANAL, 6 MILES SOUTH OF NEW ORLEANS, BETWEEN AN IMPASSABLE SWAMP AND THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. AN ARTILLERY DUEL ON JANUARY 1ST RESULTED IN THE BRITISH GUNS BECOMING SILENT. THEN ON JANUARY 8TH, 1815, PAKENHAM CHARGED WITH 5400 VETERANS OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS. THE RESULTING SLAUGHTER RESULTED IN ABOUT 2500 BRITISH KILLED, WOUNDED, OR MISSING -- VERSUS ABOUT 300 ON THE AMERICAN SIDE.
