Description
English: Washington Street entrance to the Brooklyn Theater, shortly after its destruction on the night of December 5, 1876. Camera is pointing south down Washington Street. First building, behind the tree, is the Dieter Hotel. The theater was an 'L' shaped structure that wrapped around this hotel. The next structure down the street is the Washington Street entrance of the Brooklyn Theatre. The narrow door on the left led to the gallery. Adjoining it is a wide double door that led into the vestibule and lobby. The Washington Street entrance seems hardly damaged; the brownstone has been darkened by the traces of smoke. Two people are on the roof of the theater, possibly looking down at the ruins of the auditorium. The small building to the right of the theater is the First Precinct Station House, Brooklyn municipal police, which was threatened by the blaze. A crowd of people are at the front door, possibly among those inquiring after missing people. Barely visible to the right of the frame is the central U. S. Post office. Compare with a view of the theater before the blaze.
