English: Arms of Bidlake of Bidlake in the parish of Bridestowe, Devon: Gules, a fess between three pigeons argent (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.83, "birds (?pigeons)"). The identification of the charges as doves (a species of pigeon) is asserted by Sabine Baring-Gould in his article on Bidlake Manor in his Devonshire Characters and Strange Events (1908), p.217: "The Bidlakes bore two (sic) white doves, but
naturalists say that doves and pigeons are the most quarrelsome of birds"[1] |
